The keto diet has a new version that many people have been trying since it promises to make their weight loss plan easier. The “lazy keto” reduces the time and attention required to manage food intake when following the low-carb, high-fat approach.
One of the main reasons people give up on losing some fats is a highly restrictive diet. The traditional keto diet requires removing numerous foods and maintain low-carb meals.
This is because the diet needs to maintain a consistent ketosis. The body enters this metabolic state when it uses fat instead of carbohydrates to generate energy.
To achieve ketosis, an individual should take 65 percent to 85 percent of calories from fat, according to Melanie Boehmer, an outpatient dietitian at Lenox Hill Hospital. But some people struggle to meet this requirement.
Enter the lazy keto diet. People are moving to this new approach from the traditional keto due to less stressful way of managing their food consumption.
Lazy keto only requires tracking carb intake and allows people to ignore the quantities of fat and protein. It is true that this approach is much easier to follow but experts warned it may not offer the same health benefits of keto diet.
It also increases their risk of weight gain since people stop monitoring their overall food intake. Lazy keto is not actually keto and does not provide any benefits of ketosis.
Lazy keto “would be more of a modified Atkins diet,” Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University, told Men’s Health. The Atkins diet restricts carb but it is not designed to promote ketosis.
Another problem with the “lazy” approach is the condition called keto flu. People experience this condition when ketosis becomes on and off.
Keto flu can cause fatigue and constipation for longer periods of time. Symptoms commonly appear in the first few days after changes in daily food consumption.
The flu could stay for a couple of weeks until the body maintains consistent ketosis.
“It’s very, very hard to follow an extreme diet,” Weinandy said. But the keto diet has been found effective to promote weight loss and better health, including increased levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, reduced blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure.
