If you’ve got a favourite fast food outlet – and if you’re reading this it’s likely you do – there’s got to be at least one menu item you wish would come back into circulation.
There’s a fast food junkie in all of us. Some of you are instinctively shaking your heads, which is perfectly understandable. Avoiding fast food is a wise move, but deep down there’s a part of you that bemoans the introduction of compelling health advice, keto diets and holistic mind-body dogmas. What happened to the good old days when a bucket of high calorie deep fried sodium constituted a premium meal?
In Australia, McDonald’s, KFC and Hungry Jack’s constitute the big three fast food chains. In the USA the competition is more intense, with Taco Bell the primary challenger to the big three. Of course Taco Bell can now be found in Australia as well. After many years of speculation and false starts the American chain is set to expand to around 100 outlets within the next five years.
If there’s one dish from the Taco Bell menu that holds mythical repute, it’d be the XXL Chalupa. The Chalupa is a regular menu item, which features the chain’s signature fried hard shell taco stuffed with ground beef, cheddar cheese, crispy lettuce, tomatoes and nacho cheese sauce.
The XXL version was an immense 57.5% larger than the standard and it’s caused Taco Bell devotees to drool incessantly ever since it was discontinued in 2011.
Closer to home, a Change.org petition emerged last year calling for Hungry Jack’s to bring back their chicken fries. Another M.I.A. fast food item that has online posters grieving is McDonald’s chicken fajitas. While some suggested the fast food behemoth’s foray into Tex Mex was ill-advised, others continue to pine for a spicy wrap instead of a burger.
