EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The new Blenderz Smoothie & Yogurt Bar on North First Avenue is the creation of owner Brent Counts, who put it together based on everything he loved about smoothie shops he’d visited in larger cities.
Counts is from Evansville but traveled the world while working for a large spray-tanning company. While away from home, he noticed the newest trends and aesthetics in food and beverage businesses.
Back in Evansville, he was remodeling the North First Avenue building and considered putting in a tanning salon, but decided to go with a cheerful, kid and family-oriented smoothie and frozen yogurt café instead.
He designed and implemented everything himself, and now we have Blenderz.
Counts is excited to be offering products that are tasty and fun but also healthy to the north side community he grew up in.
“If you’re going to offer food, you want to have a healthy option,” he said. “I decided to go with smoothies. They’ve been popular and gaining in popularity for about 15 years. For people who don’t want a smoothie, the frozen yogurt and toppings add a lot more selections. We have low-fat and no-fat and healthier options in the yogurt too.”
Counts really likes kids and having a space for them to go is important for him. Private rooms in the back of the shop aren’t being rented right now due to COVID-19, but eventually they’ll be available for groups, events and parties.
“Anybody will be able to book them free of charge and no purchase from the shop will be necessary,” Counts said. “A school group, church group, sports group, anybody can book them. I want this to be a place for students from Central, Highland, and Stringtown to hang out. A lot of students walk to Starbucks and wait for parents to pick them up and they can come here. We have outlets, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of room to study.”

Right next door is vintage arcade and toy shop Secret Headquarters — look for future collaborations between the two businesses.
Some larger arcade events, such as pinball tournaments, may happen at Blenderz. Counts said that movie and game nights or Wii tournaments could be in the cards as well.
“We really want to keep families engaged and involved,” Counts said.
On the menu
Blenderz smoothies are made with real fruit puree. It’s far healthier and less processed than syrups but provides consistency across all seasons. Customers may customize with their pick of add-ins, all made locally at HealthSmart Foods on Evansville’s East Side.
All smoothies contain 20 grams of whey protein and have no added sugar, no high-fructose corn syrup, are gluten free and dairy-free if you request no protein powder. Lactase can also be added.
Flavors range from the favorite strawberry banana or chocolate to the more exotic passionfruit orange guava and are offered in categories based on their benefits: Burner Blends with metabolism boost, Recovery Blends with amino acids, Veggie Blends with a full day’s suggested allowance of vegetable nutrition, Muscle Builders with added glutamine.
Customers may also customize and build their own smoothie with chocolate or peanut butter, or other supplements such as creatine for muscle growth, extra fiber, a multivitamin and others.
“I have a customer that has been here every day since we opened on June 1,” Counts said. “He’s diabetic and he takes insulin, and his smoothies take care of his sweet tooth for a snack and have really has helped regulate him; it’s making a big difference in his life.”
Frozen yogurt is offered in a changing array of flavors. Toppings are free, and an employee will add them as the customer desires. Healthier low-fat and no-fat yogurts are available.
Keto fat bombs and other packaged snacks made by HealthSmart Foods are also offered at the counter.
Blenderz runs a weekly give-back for a local organization that lasts all week.
Note that Blenderz opens every day except Sunday at 7 a.m. for a breakfast smoothie boost. Soon, look for fresh pastries and coffee to be added to the menu lineup.
